Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches can strike at any age, and affect approximately 12% of the population, with women forming the majority of sufferers.

Symptoms

  • Migraine headaches are characterized by moderate to severe throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head.
  • Slight head movement typically makes the pain worse.
The pain may migrate to another area of the head or down the neck into the shoulder.Cause
While the exact cause of migraine headache is not clear, the following factors are of particular interest to women:
  • Fluctuating estrogen level may cause what is known as menstrual migraines, which are more debilitating and difficult to treat.
  • Oral contraceptives, pregnancy, estrogen-replacement therapy or hormonal treatments for fibroids can provoke such headaches. [link to hormonal treatments for fibroids]

Treatment

  • Homeopathic treatments may be effective.
  • Over the counter pain relievers, prescription analgesics or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be used. (See also discussion on analgesics in The New York Times, January 12 2003

Over-the-Counter Headache,

  • Sufferers may also benefit from prescription drugs such as ergot alkaloids, anti-emetics, narcotics or corticosteroid
